Given to the National Park Service in 1950, in 1989 it became a National Historic Landmark.</li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/gra.htm">Grand Village of the Natchez Indians</a> - These three platform mounds, an adjacent ceremonial plaza and associated habitation areas mark the political and religious capital of the Natchez Indian chiefdom of the late 17th century and early 18th century. A number of French colonists who witnessed the use of the mounds at Grand Village recorded their observations. These 18th-century accounts offer a rare firsthand glimpse of mound ceremonialism, by then a nearly extinct holdover tradition from the precontact period. </li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/bea.htm">Bear Creek Mound and Village Site</a></li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/Pha.htm">Pharr Mounds</a> - This site complex consists of eight burial mounds built during the Middle Woodland period, between 1 and 200 A.D. </li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/owl.htm">Owl Creek Site</a></li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/Byn.htm">Bynum Mound and Village Site </a>- The six burial mounds and associated habitation area at the Bynum site were built during the Middle Woodland period, between 100 B.C. and 100 A.D. </li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/win.htm">Winterville Site</a> - Most of the mounds at the Winterville site were constructed during the Mississippian period, between 1200 and 1250 A.D. This intensive time of mound building reflects contact between local Indians of the Coles Creek culture and influences emanating from the great Cahokia site in Illinois, the largest mound center in the United States.</li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/Jak.htm">Jaketown Site</a></li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/Poc.htm">Pocahontas Mound A</a></li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/Boy.htm">Boyd Mound Site </a>- The six small burial mounds at the Boyd site were built during the Late Woodland and Early Mississippian periods (circa 800 to 1100 A.D. ). One of these mounds, Mound 2, is situated in a clearing adjacent to the parking area and is accessible to visitors.</li><li><a href="http://www.nps.gov/history/NR/travel/mounds/nan.htm">Nanih Waiya Mound and Village </a>- Although built by American Indians, by the 18th century Nanih Waiya had come to be venerated by the Choctaw tribe. The site plays a central role in the tribe's origin legends. In one version, the mound gave birth to the tribe--the people emerged from the underworld here and rested on the mound's slopes to dry before populating the surrounding region. </li></ol><p>I have actually been to Nanih Waiya. There is some Butterfly Weed in the garden, but I am unsure if it is the native version.<br /><br />Butterfly Garden post at <a href="http://alasandra2003.blogspot.com/search?q=butterfly+garden">Alasandra</a>Alastriona, The Cats and Dogs http://www.blogger.com/profile/13233710830920626326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825969334937561934.post-16172305821175683052007-09-24T18:18:00.000-05:002007-09-24T18:23:05.466-05:00Can you spot the bird in this picture?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgim3qXrkwParjCPF_wbpanzckgwNTW0BcYUq4YiM8hpx7yPnHoi0tHaLHQK9E-KkMDu5VaqI3QcAVMJaorbzvPuUYwod59r3cOqs__OTOtjUcdsT2Zg3Srr3ILHUt4fgX7CEEtmA5yndtz/s1600-h/IMG_0642.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113914209430233586" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgim3qXrkwParjCPF_wbpanzckgwNTW0BcYUq4YiM8hpx7yPnHoi0tHaLHQK9E-KkMDu5VaqI3QcAVMJaorbzvPuUYwod59r3cOqs__OTOtjUcdsT2Zg3Srr3ILHUt4fgX7CEEtmA5yndtz/s200/IMG_0642.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div></div>Alastriona, The Cats and Dogs http://www.blogger.com/profile/13233710830920626326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825969334937561934.post-72709976076572741472007-09-14T14:58:00.000-05:002007-09-14T15:30:15.110-05:00Native PlantsThese plants were seen at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center or along the Pascagoula River September 13, 2007.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8nFYGROEIEKAr9-eA_Sfg6ba6pbc-6Qq6peo_UYas_1AUbyepsnFRTU1H53jz0kSDnlk6v60sig4dBg3bJFiEnd2CW-TojiQffzOs4pHp2TbxAokyLca4kr3bus-cSNxDF-TUop69uAT2/s1600-h/Marsh+Fleabane.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110153678749269810" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8nFYGROEIEKAr9-eA_Sfg6ba6pbc-6Qq6peo_UYas_1AUbyepsnFRTU1H53jz0kSDnlk6v60sig4dBg3bJFiEnd2CW-TojiQffzOs4pHp2TbxAokyLca4kr3bus-cSNxDF-TUop69uAT2/s200/Marsh+Fleabane.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><p align="left"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFilWWrNY_3-6Oe9kKfgBv3JLMJ2uXXi7Yq3K3sQwJRCEU42VCecsb6xz3dxEyYoIg_q3ntUoaCtvPUvchzRWCyQseeVk9RST2ODD1jRcq8ovLzq8pMisatZtIRRCAswV61TCdDPpjjvkj/s1600-h/March+Fleabane+aka+Pluchea+rosea+Godfrey.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110154456138350402" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFilWWrNY_3-6Oe9kKfgBv3JLMJ2uXXi7Yq3K3sQwJRCEU42VCecsb6xz3dxEyYoIg_q3ntUoaCtvPUvchzRWCyQseeVk9RST2ODD1jRcq8ovLzq8pMisatZtIRRCAswV61TCdDPpjjvkj/s200/March+Fleabane+aka+Pluchea+rosea+Godfrey.JPG" border="0" /></a></p><p align="left"><a href="http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PLRO">Pluchea rosea Godfrey </a>(common name Marsh Fleabane) </p><p align="left"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUDT7VIgrPlSe1OGnCagXCP7epYrIgDQWXm7aqCBD7KaxIpQ6TvlHcyy8Zy2DZYKiBB-OECc6q0UEYIiZPfb2OLLRstmwJ1s7k7E6WFPd0yFxO4oB82nhbbSNltyg6f7oLRYawt26GWg9a/s1600-h/Asters.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110152227050323730" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUDT7VIgrPlSe1OGnCagXCP7epYrIgDQWXm7aqCBD7KaxIpQ6TvlHcyy8Zy2DZYKiBB-OECc6q0UEYIiZPfb2OLLRstmwJ1s7k7E6WFPd0yFxO4oB82nhbbSNltyg6f7oLRYawt26GWg9a/s200/Asters.JPG" border="0" /></a> Asters<br /></p><p align="left"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0v0Nf58NNxUAEteYFbuIZ-lp8EvNsy_EtqyTp8UKpPA2PJ3BFSSypd0rr_NOt_DuIfxawk1eYSyWsBM3Z_9VJQJwPnr0pLMamH3wtm4UoMgQY40f14Y0K5J06tgk9uKHVAbExcREQ88V6/s1600-h/Halberd-Leaved+Marsh-Mallow.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110152609302413090" style="CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0v0Nf58NNxUAEteYFbuIZ-lp8EvNsy_EtqyTp8UKpPA2PJ3BFSSypd0rr_NOt_DuIfxawk1eYSyWsBM3Z_9VJQJwPnr0pLMamH3wtm4UoMgQY40f14Y0K5J06tgk9uKHVAbExcREQ88V6/s200/Halberd-Leaved+Marsh-Mallow.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=HILA2">Hibiscus militaris Cav</a>. We had a GREAT time!!!</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><br /><br />Captain McCoy with <a href="http://rivercritters.pardue-consulting.com/index.html">McCoy's River and Marsh Tours</a> displayed an impressive knowledge of the native wildlife and plants found along the Pascagoula River. Do you know what the word Pascagoula means? Thanks to Captain McCoy, we now know it means "bread people". We also discovered that the temperature of the nest determines if alligators will be female or male. We saw <a href="http://www.dmr.state.ms.us/Coastal-Ecology/preserves/plants/grasses-sedges-rushes/wild-rice/wild-rice.htm">Wild Rice</a>, <a href="http://www.wildflowerfarm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=11375">Asters</a>, Morning Glories, <a href="http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=ERPH">Fleabane</a>, and many other interesting plants. We spotted <a href="http://www.twingroves.district96.k12.il.us/Wetlands/Egret/Egrets.html">Egrets</a>, a young Alligator (which is the size I like them), <a href="http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Osprey.html">Ospreys</a>, and <a href="http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/i2110id.html">Clapper Rails </a>.</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><br /><br />At the Audubon Center we discovered their future plans for a green building, Mozart showed us their <a href="http://www.gardeners.com/Build-a-Rain-Garden/default/5712.page">rain gardens</a>, and hummingbird feeders (some he had designed himself), and told us many other interesting things about the center. Mark LaSalle provided us with handouts on birds commonly found in Mississippi, plans for bird houses & flowerbeds, and tips on composting.</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><br /><br />Sean is already looking forward to going back this winter when the big Alligators will be out.</div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><br /><br />Thank you Captain McCoy, Mark & Mozart for an interesting, informative and FUN field trip. </div>Alastriona, The Cats and Dogs http://www.blogger.com/profile/13233710830920626326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7825969334937561934.post-4634554413921647982007-09-09T11:26:00.000-05:002007-09-09T11:29:49.158-05:00The Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812Read about <a href="http://alasandra2003.blogspot.com/2007/09/alasandras-book-club-andrew-jacksons.html">The Mississippi Territory in the War of 1812 </a>by Mrs. Dunbar Rowland <a href="http://alasandra2003.blogspot.com/2007/09/alasandras-book-club-andrew-jacksons.html">here</a>.<br />The book was published in 1926.Alastriona, The Cats and Dogs http://www.blogger.com/profile/13233710830920626326noreply@blogger.com0
