Mississippi Sandhill Cranes

Number Nine, the first sandhill crane conceived from frozen semen that was later thawed out, arrived in South Mississippi on Friday.

Pascagoula River Audubon Center

Sean and I were lucky enough to get to go on a field trip to the Pascagoula River Audubon Center today. We had a GREAT time!!!

Captain McCoy with McCoy's River and Marsh Tours displayed an impressive knowledge of the native wildlife and plants found along the Pascagoula River. Do you know what the word Pascagoula means? Thanks to Captain McCoy, we now know it means "bread people". We also discovered that the temperature of the nest determines if alligators will be female or male. We saw Wild Rice, Asters, Morning Glories, Fleabane, and many other interesting plants. We spotted Egrets, a young Alligator (which is the size I like them), Ospreys, and Clapper Rails .

At the Audubon Center we discovered their future plans for a green building, Mozart showed us their rain gardens, and hummingbird feeders (some he had designed himself), and told us many other interesting things about the center. Mark LaSalle provided us with handouts on birds commonly found in Mississippi, plans for bird houses & flowerbeds, and tips on composting.

Sean is already looking forward to going back this winter when the big Alligators will be out.
